EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
