Trump Calls for Jailing of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as National Guard Arrive in Metropolis

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on social media early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements coincide with the deployment of state military personnel in the Chicago region following directives from the federal administration, despite strong objections from state officials including the governor and mayor.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump has sought to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on Wednesday. "I am staying anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of elected officials checking his power. What's next on the path to complete authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, National Guard units from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the administration advances with its aggressive crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has called Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", despite official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, including murders.

On Wednesday, two hundred Texas National Guard members were scheduled to arrive to the region, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard personnel preparing to mobilize, per reports. Officials reportedly stated the soldiers would not perform police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and government buildings.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with state guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Trucks labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Mobile units were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed no-fly zones over the military base for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has escalated deportation operations in the city in recent weeks, triggering protests, especially near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action targeting the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their case is set for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also issued an executive order on Monday banning federal immigration agents and related personnel from using city-owned property as staging areas for deportation efforts.

The governor has charged Trump of using military forces as "political props" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is trying to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act limits the military's role in civilian law enforcement. However, Trump has said he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which permits a president to send regular army in regions that are failing to put down an insurrection or are defying national authority.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has dispatched or mentioned deploying troops to over ten cities, such as major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the armed forces is necessary to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Data indicates that serious offenses nationwide has declined in the past few years. In the city, for example, homicides were down nearly one-third to under three hundred through late summer, according to police data.

New survey data published on Wednesday revealed that the majority of US citizens oppose the deployment of troops without an foreign danger.
